DABBLER GIVEAWAY DETAILS AT THE END OF THIS ARTICLE!

A title like that is bound to attract a lot of interest. In our ever faster-paced world, quick solutions are more and more in demand. Pair that with the expertise of Carmindy, the makeup artist for TLC‘s What Not to Wear and you won’t be able to resist picking this book up. I don’t wear makeup and I still found the book intriguing. I’m sure a familiar and very likable talent has a lot to do with it, but I think there’s an allure to makeup that draws in all women, whether they like to apply it themselves or not. The aesthetics are pretty difficult to resist and if you like beautiful things, the images in this book are a definite hook.

It’s an extremely easy read. It’s so uncomplicated and full of vibrant colours that it could easily be a coffee table book. You would be able to pick up a quick tip just by opening to a random page. I just gave it a go and got page 74, which is a section of the book that has advise for Asian women (now THAT is an insane coincidence!). In addition to the topics within each chapter, “Quick Tip” and “Fast Fix” boxes are interspersed throughout the book. In this particular page, the Fast Fix reads:

“Asian eyelashes tend to point downward (that’s me!), but if you curl them, you’ll create an eye-opening effect. For best results, don’t use a conventional lash curler that crimps your entire upper lash line at once. Instead use a small, half-inch (or so) curler. It better allows you to follow your natural lash-line curve for beautiful results. Afterward, apply waterproof mascara, which will hold your curl longer than regular mascara.”

I found these random tidbits of information quite enjoyable. They’re fun and provide bonus information that you didn’t even know you needed. Here’s another taste from the “Skin Essentials” chapter:

You’ve all been waiting for this! Beau Nelson, Creative Director of Beauté Cosmetics, takes on Smokey Eyes and shows how easy it can be to achieve that smouldering look. Don’t be afraid to tackle this challenge. As Beau shows in Part III of his Essential Makeup Tips series, it can be done in just five minutes. What surprised me was learning that you don’t have to be too neat when applying the makeup. As long as you have the right tools and know how to use them, you’ll have no trouble achieving that perfect look. And you know Beau! He’s got all sorts of tricks from the trade. Remember when Brangelina had their baby last year? Barely introduced to the world and Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt managed to create massive hype for the Pots & Pans Band t-shirt that she wore in the much anticipated People Magazine photos shoot. Now THAT’s star power.

Kingsley, the designer of the line with the same name, was in Vancouver for the first time this past weekend and sat down with me to chat about the evolution of children’s clothing and life after the whirlwind of publicity.

The brand was formed three years ago after the birth of Kingsley’s son, Zephir. Like any new parent-to-be, Kingsley and Amy were excited to start shopping for their little boy and very quickly realized that there was a very limited selection of clothing that defined their lifestyle. They didn’t settle however. When Zephir came out of the hospital, he was wearing the first ever hand-crafted Kingsley onesy. That got a huge response. All their friends were into it and that is how Kingsley Clothing was created. Their local community was very supportive but they never anticipated celebrities like Gwen Stefani, Johnny Depp, Chris Cornell (their favourite rock star), Seal & Heidi Klum, to turn to them for their children’s fashion needs.

Kingsley isn’t into the habit of sending celebrities clothes. That’s never been his philosophy. “We don’t like to shove it down people’s throats no matter who they are, celebrity or not. We just figured if they like it, they’ll buy it and that’s always been the case.” They send Brad & Angelina a package once in a while now as a thank you for all the exposure they’ve given him but that’s where it stops. Kingsley is confident that the quality of the product speaks for itself. A lot of copycat brands have emerged as a result of his great success but the motives are different. Kingsley saw a need and wanted to fill a void in children’s clothing.

Much of his inspiration comes from his son. The Pots & Pans Band t-shirt came about when Zephir started a band in their kitchen. He was the drummer, banging on all the pots and pans and that sparked an idea. With a background in fine art, graphics, and photography, Kingsley is now expanding the line to pants, wovens, a line of accessories, and larger sizes.
