WaspReena’s Tip of the Week:

Immediate relief for a wasp sting can be attained by applying a paste made of meat tenderizer and a little water. Leaving this on for at least a half hour will take away pain and itch.

If part of a stinger remains in the skin, apply a poultice such as stale bread wetted with milk, to safely draw the stinger out; repeat if necessary.

Look out for a rash or swelling that gets worse instead of better. If this happens, contact your doctor.

Clogged DrainReena’s Tip of the Week:

Keep that water running with this easy-to-use recipe for unclogging drains!

First of all, store a hair trap (purchase from hardware store) in the drain. Remove once a week and discard into garbage or compost.

For a slow or smelly drain, pour in half a cup of baking soda, followed by half a cup of vinegar. Put plug in drain and fill sink or bathtub with hot water (use caution if small children are around). Leave overnight and release plug in the morning. Repeat if necessary.

Cola in the drain is also a great helper in unclogging drains.

If the drain remains plugged, use a commercial drain cleaner or get out the snake and snake the drain, ick!

This week, Reena’s tip addresses a viewer question:

Original Email:

I have some scratches on the windshield of my truck. What can I do to get rid of them?

Thanking you in advance, Wally

Car WindshieldGreat question Wally!

Your best bet is to take the windshield into a windshield repair specialist. However, if you want to tackle the problem at home, apply a rubbing compound such as 3M or Sickens with a clean, soft cloth. Crest toothpaste or jeweller’s rouge (polishing cream) is also an option for minor scratches. An automotive car wax such as Turtle Wax or a paste wax is another option, but test everything on an inconspicuous area first so that the window doesn’t become hazy. Keep in mind that these solutions are for small scratches only. Have a great summer!

SlugReena’s Tip of the Week:

Got slugs? Here are some suggestions on how to get rid of them:

* Sprinkle cornmeal or coffee grounds around plants

* Wrap a length of copper around the bottom of plant pots and stems. The copper reacts with slug slime and causes a flow of electricity

* Loosely wrap aluminum foil around plant stems. Slugs can’t climb it

* According to Ida of Manitoba, you can keep slugs away by spreading ashes around your plants. Most cottages have an outdoor fire-pit for a plentiful supply

* Slugs love cheap beer. Pour some in a jar, dig a hole in the ground and place it there. Slugs will be drawn to it and drown. Only problem? You’ll have to clean the mess
