The Invasion
In Theatres Today

First of all, I would like to explain the difference between a movie billed as a horror, and one billed as a thriller. A horror movie, if successful, makes you afraid to go to sleep at night and a thriller, if successful, makes you jump in your seat when you watch it. The Invasion, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, is a thriller that makes you afraid to go to sleep at night.

The story is based on a magazine serial by Jack Finney that later became a novel. It spawned a movie in 1956 (Walter Wanger’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and in 1978 (Invasion of the Body Snatchers). I haven’t seen the originals, so I can’t say if one is better than the other (if you know, leave me a comment).

I enjoyed most of this incarnation. It was very slow to start, but once the pieces began to fall into place, it progressed at a nice pace. There was even a car chase that was up to ‘Die Hard’ standards. Some parts got really intense, thrilling you could say, and really gave your heart a workout.

Nicole Kidman’s performance was amazing (I’ve been in love with her since Moulin Rouge! though, so that opinion is somewhat biased). Daniel Craig didn’t really get that much face time, so it’s hard to judge his performance (ladies, the following information might effect whether you decide to buy a ticket on opening weekend or not: Daniel Craig does NOT take off his clothes in this movie).

Although I had fun at the movie (it was thrilling), it was also very predictable. I recommend seeing it on a cheap ticket night or waiting until it’s playing in the second run theatres. It’s not worth paying full price to see in the theatre.
