Last Sunday I posted an article about the so-called “hacking” of Canadian music station MuchMusic. In it I explained why the claims of this being a hack are questionable because it would be next to impossible to actually hack a modern broadcasting station, especially the national broadcast. I suggested that this was not a hack but a marketing scheme for some new show or service from the station. The article has generated a huge response (197 comments and counting) and has sparked a huge online chase for Phreak615 and the real reasons behind these clips. In the last couple of days several blogs have been launched by the participants of the chase and the story is taking on mythic proportions. Thursday I contacted MuchMusic directly to get an official response to the alleged hacks. If this really was an incursion in their programming, they would have to have an official response as it would be a severe breach of broadcast regulations and their broadcasting license. This morning I got this response:

I also called MuchMusic directly to get an official response. I was forwarded to a machine and I’m still waiting for a reply from the person I was forwarded to. The case took a very strange turn last night: Since the original post went up, it was the first link when you searched for “phreak615″ on Google. Then yesterday, the article completely vanished from Google’s index. Even if you search for the exact article title, you’ll only find one or two reference links to it. The same goes for Digg and Technorati. It’s as if someone actually went in and deleted the article from the index. I’ve never seen or heard of anything like it before. Yet another mystery I guess. If you don’t want to read the incredibly long comments thread and just want to know what this is all about, here’s a short summary: A character by the name of Phreak615 has been overlaying clips from YouTube on top of MuchMusic programming for the last two weeks. These clips only occur during original MuchMusic programming and the incursions are repeated during reruns. Phreak615 himself posted an article explaining how this was done: A wireless router was allegedly hooked up to the broadcast server and content was uploaded from a laptop PC outside the building. A custom script would then superimpose the content on top of the programming. But there are some serious problems with these claims: First off, if there really is a router attached to the broadcast server, it would have been noticed by the techs. They are in the server room all the time. Secondly, if a script was altering the broadcast, the log would show the alterations and they would have been removed immediately. The fact that the same “hacks” appear in reruns pretty much tells the story. Furthermore, if the channel really was being hacked, MuchMusic would be in huge trouble with the CRTC because they are responsible for any and all content displayed on their station. Such a hack would become national, if not international news overnight. The initial conclusion I presented was that this was either a disgruntled MUCH employee playing a prank on his employer (in which case he would be caught, fired and probably prosecuted immediately) or that it is some clever marketing scheme for a new show or service from the station. As the incursions progressed it quickly became obvious that the latter is the most plausible answer. After a few days, Mark77 proposed that this was in reality a buildup to a new show called “Much PhreakOuts†or something along those lines that would be launched on June 15th. It’s a good theory, but it turned out that June 15th is the date of the MuchMusic Video Awards and it would be highly unusual for MuchMusic to launch a new show on that date. Of course this could also be a buildup to the MMVA itself (maybe they will be hosted by the hacker?) though no one seemed interested in that theory. Two YouTubers suggested it might be a buildup to a new Speaker’s Corner type show where viewers upload videos of themselves that are played on the air. Also a good theory. Then another theory was presented: Could this be an Alternate Reality Game (ARG)? If so, there should be clues to get further. In the beginning, there was little to indicate this, but as Mark77 became more aggressive in his theories, Phreak615 started calling him out. On Thursday, Phreak615 posted a direct challenge to Mark77 on his blog telling him to go to a specific location in Montreal. Mark77 did so but found nothing. Later the same day, Phreak615 posted three photos from the location showing a mannequin wearing a green mask of the same kind he is wearing in his videos. The question now is what significance this mask has. Does it contain a message for Mark77? Or is it just a random event? Stay tuned to find out. Another blogger calling himself Caesar Cipher appeared Thursday with a new theory: Phreak615 is actually MuchMusic VJ Devon Soltendieck. Caesar claims he actually witnessed the person who took the photos of the mask and that he has evidence that will unmask Phreak615. It’ll be interesting to see where that thread leads to. It seems pretty clear at this point that the whole Phreak615 situation is a huge marketing scheme of some kind. It is looking more and more like an ARG and with several people now “playing†the game, it’s working just as planned. I have to say I’m a bit saddened by the fact that I helped kick start this with my original article because what I intended to do was show people how poorly developed the concept was. And just so that’s said: I’ve gotten many emails asking/claiming that I am somehow part of the conspiracy. I can honestly say I have no part in it. I merely called MuchMusic out for taking their viewers for ignorant morons. Then the story took on a life of its own and now we are here. I’m still curious to see where this is heading, though I’m pretty sure there won’t be any big surprises. Then again, I could be wrong. Hey I think I might have another hint to it leading to Devon Soltendieck. Just look at a picture of Devon Soltendieck and compaire the differences in Phreak615′s chin and his. They are nearly the same. I’m talking about the dimple in his chin btw.

Look at some of the videos of Phreak615 and look at devon. and it really depends on the pictures you look at if you don’t get one with his chin or just a really bad picture you won’t see it. Anyways they said Devon has a alterego too. So I’m convinced it’s him. but I’m still listening to any other ideas people have. Oh on a side note. the Last video Phreak615 sent looks different. I mean he does not look like he does usually. But then again he was closer to the camera this time. Idk. We’ll see I guess.

Hey everyone, I am a colleague of XJ’s who posted on this blog in the beginning. I made an interesting discover while I was talking to XJ today about the site: http://www.ppp3.110mb.com/
In the “hidden” part of the source code it mentions; “….This software contains code derived from the RSA Data Security Inc. MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm, including various….”
This is interesting because from a security standpoint this is a perfect way to generate and validate user names and passwords for login credentials, which is exactly what this page is supposed to do.
I did some digging and you can use this website to input text and convert it to an MD5 fingerprint. I’m not entirely certain but perhaps there is a way to use a tool such as this to generate login credentials for the site based on the “study parameter”.
Thoughts?

Listen Ppl…I rele think that Phreak615 is Devon. They look the same and Muchmusic wouldnt put a random stranger in charge of this “hacker”-promotion crap. its gotta be someone Much music we all know like one of there VJs. Anyone watch MOD Today, Matte Babel just said that Devon has an alter-ego,that he cant talk about right now. Plus Devons Hosted the MMVAs before, which are coming out in June !5(6:15)…ooo i think we got him. theres so many clues. its just a matter of time of time before he reveals himself. Even if it turns out not to be him, the best thing to say right now is that our strongest lead it that Phreak615 is Much Music Vj Devon(keep watching Mod to see if devon hosts when a interferance occurs that will prove that devon isnt)….. And darkness, i appreaciate what your doing but your going crazy with this thing…its something rele simple. keep outa the Polybius Project, or whatever the hell that thing is. All of this is an inside job meaning Much Music is doing it on purpose(for god knows what reason). if it were a rele hacker then Much would shut down immediately and go into a cyber terrorist lock down situation. Ok, a couple more things I found…which are kinda interesting. First of all, at the bottom of the ppp3 page there is a reference to the “Polybius Project – Phase Three” which if you research it is an urban legend surrounding a arcade game from the early 80s called “Polybius“. Supposedly, this game made its players go insane and was created by a secret government organization which was working on mind control. This is nuts, I know, but the name of the secret organization that created it….SINNESLOSCHEN (creepy!)….the exact same name referenced in the hidden part of the ppp3 page and is dated 80-81, the same years Polybius was around before it mysteriously dissapeared. This also ties nicely to the reference of Ewan Cameron who worked on MK-ULTRA the infamous US government mind control experiments AND is credited on the ppp3 page as working from the university of Oregon…if you read the Polybius piece you will see that the arcade game was ONLY released in Oregon…freaky. Finally, if you research Polybuis you will see that he was a Greek historian, and one of his claims to fame was a cipher called the “Poluybius Square“, which can be used to encrypt and decrypt information….like a username or password perhaps?

exactly, the best bet is to just understand that Much Music is doing this on purpose. Believe me when i if saw it i was scared outa my f*ucking mind..i thouhgt it was a real hacking, its happened before, but no1s smart enuf to trick national television more then once. Phreak615 is just a stupid promotional ad either for the MMVAs or some new show, not rele anything to worry about =)

So obviously Caesar Cipher is a lying sack of shit at this point. Another mediawhore? Do we need any more of those in the mix?
Somehow I thought Cipher was offering a way forward. He’s either the Phreak covering his tracks (but the Phreak is all about laying tracks), or some kind of corporate/IT suit. (oh no, we haven’t been hacked at all!)
What else could it be? Maybe just some loner shit.

I mean, the “world leading hacker hunter” or whatever is on the case Thursday night, just happens to be in Toronto Friday, and has a meeting with the senior guy ASAP (who is probably booked for weeks on other appointments – you can get in to see the CEO of a multi-billion dollar corporation just like that???).
He brought nothing new to the table. He thought a blurr in the reflection would lead to someone identifying the guy (wasn’t he supposedly watching this go down? who is supposed to have better intel than a guy who’s standing right there on the spot?). Oh right, he actually only figured this all out using the same image tags as we could all see by opening the photos in Photoshop.

I’m surprised noone has noticed the striking similarity between the Portal ARG and this Polybius Project Phase III rubbish.
This is obviously an ARG. The University of Puerto Rico would never host such a site, especially not on Christmas Island where the CX domains belong.

Marek Vachousek was the programmer who came up with the name Polybius – he had studied Greek Mythology at Masaryk University and came up with the name because it sounded quite bold and mysterious, which is what we wanted quite simply. The inspiried graphics combined with the puzzle elements and scintilating gameplay was something to behold – we playtested it for hours and hours and it certainly was an addictive game that was well loved professionally and recreationally by all that played it. The company couldn’t have been happier and we all thought we were on the verge of something very special indeed. We then received a phonecall stating that there were concerns within the company that the basic graphics which featured prominently in so many other games of the time were fine for the average gamer to spend hours at a time without any noticable physical or mental detriments but the intense and engrossing gameplay of this new step was very much an unknown quantity so the game was put back several months due to divided opinion within their board of directors, much to our consternation for breaking our backs to finish it on time. We received heartening collated playtesting figures and were then told that the game would receive a temporary limited release which bouyed us significantly but shortly after, we received terrible news – a thirteen year old boy from the Lloyd District of Portland, Oregon had suffered an Epileptic Fit while playing the game, only six days after the machines had literally been installed. One of the senior employees that I knew very well contacted me to tell me that it caused immense ripples of panic throughout the company who were of the opinion that they had “created a monster” as such. It may sound laughable now but please bear in mind that this was 25 years ago when the Video Game Industry was in it’s infancy. Every effort was made to withdraw the game from the public domain as quickly as possible but the scaremongering was already out in force and a lot of the children were queueing up or daring their friends to play this supposedly nightmarish game. Company Directors descended on the town to assess the situation which may account for these reports of “Strange Men in Black Suits hanging around” and the machines were often taken in daylight, causing minor but noticable incidents. As far as I was made aware, only seven machines were distributed around the area and no other health-related incidents were reported. I heard “off the record” that the company made a one-off settlement to the boy’s family and no more was heard, apart from all the internet-based speculation and resulting paranoia. We disbanded Sinnesscholssen shortly afterwards because we didn’t want to restrict ourselves to the stringent deadlines of other companies and favoured distancing ourselves from the game in case of any lingering recriminations which could have done a great deal of damage to our personal and professional reputations which was our livelihood and with some of us having very young families, this was extremely important to us. As far as I’m aware, no ROM’s or otherwise exist unless they remain in the bowels of the company that distributed it. We only received a basic payment in view of the fact that the game was withdrawn without nationwide or international distribution so we grew to loathe it and was often a cursed word whenever we used to meet up and still is today, which is a shame. I still believe we created something that should have changed the face of gaming and would have set us apart from the rest of the industry but Arcade Games were often compared to drugs at the time because of their addictiveness and we created something that small-minded bureaucrats perceived to be the Heroin of the Video Game World that’s only crime was to be many years ahead of it’s time. LadyLovely666: We all KNOW that this is nothing more an ARG that MuchMusic is using to promote something…what that is exactly is yet to be determined. However, we are just playing along and the Polybius site is just another piece of the game…which was constructed for FUN. Its not like we seriously believe that this is legitimately tied to mind control haha, its just fun to play along.
MadMorton: I was also struck by the distinct similarities between this ARG and the one used to promote Portal. If you want some interesting reading material I suggest checking out this Wired article on the Nine Inch Nails ARG that was constructed with Trent Reznor. You have to wonder if the same company mentioned in the article, 42 Entertainment, is behind this one. As for the ppp3 site, I still haven’t wrapped my head around a way to find a username ID or password. Thoughts?

Does someone out there actually think that this game (Polybius) or the http://www.ppp3.110mb.com/ site real? I know I don’t. All the info on the site is a bunch of crap – but whoever put it together did their homework. I think it looks like fun to play with. I guess maybe its just me – I like a challenge.
Lady Love666 – nobody thinks the government has anything to do with it. Everyone knows it’s a Much Music hoax blah blah blah. We figured that out last week and 2 threads ago. I’m gonna keep playing with the Polybius Project site cause it looks like a lot of fun and personally I’m not interested in watching the weak ass programs on Much Music or Devon or any other VJ.

Listen, surley theres reason to believe that this is an ARG, but most likely its some sort of advirtisement. June 15 is the date of realease for the MMVAs…6:15, Coincedence i think not…Its prolly a promation either for the MMVAS or a new program. Maybe Phreak615 will the host for the MMVAs or something like that. Something tells that theres gonna be a new show Called like MuchPHREAKout or something like that, where people can send in there youtube videos and get there 15minutes of fame. Notice the Interferrances are featuring normal people, like the girl talking about Canada? and the guy doing that dance?? srry to anyone i offened but all of this will end soon enuf. YOu guys can have fun playing the ARG, but i just dont wanna get invovled cuz i dont think its rele one. Also, I’ve heard reports of people seeing the “hacks†on TSN and MTV Canada (both of which are owned by CTV Globemedia). CTV often cross-advertises on its networks. This points to it just being purely marketing – no conspiracy. Also, if he works for Muchmusic and is “hacking†Muchmusic, then why would it show up on other channels?

I’m a little stumped at the Polybius site. Tried a few of the Phreak’s enlightened ranting as possible ID/Passwords. Nothing yet.
I need time to digest this.
Either:
- the Phreak works for much and he’s lead us to this. (ARG, ad, whatever).
- The Phreak dose not work for much and he’s lead us to this. (It can’t possibly be real, so then what/who’s is it? – or is it somehow real???)
- He never led us to this at all, we’ve just been reading too much into everything. I swear I saw something relevant on a box of cereal the other day — that’s sarcasm, not another tangent for us all to freak out about.
- Someone else created the site, and the Phreak led us to it. (why?)
- Then I have a whole laundry list of things this devolves into if I think too hard… involving any one of us as the Phreak and/or Cipher and/or a MuchMusic VJ, and/or a CIA operative, and/or a senior executive at a national broadcaster…
What’s the significance of the 2 different domains? What is this all?

the guy in the red shirt, im guessin every one has seen this photo, but has any one tried to zoom in to a clearer view of what his hair looks like? Devon has a brother? Interesting. I seem to recall that phreak615 indicated on his blog and YouTube profile that he is 27 years old. If this is true, then that must mean that he’s Devon’s older brother. Devon was born in 1985, making him 23. So that must mean he’s Devon’s older brother. XJ, some people have been saying that this whole thing could be a blatant plug for the 2008 MMVAs, which are on June 15th (6/15). What sayeth you and FF4 on that subject? Do you find any validity in that? I do. Personally, I think that MMVA plugs begin to appear on Much around this time of year, or am I wrong? Perhaps this is an attempt by Much to either plug the MMVAs in a unique way, or to have someone “hack” them, as the MMVAs are a big event. I can tell you a story of a similar scheme used by YTV ages ago – we’re talking 1994 here – if you like. It has some similarity to this, only it was completely staged, and everyone knew about it.

Well, let’s see… What hasn’t transpired?
We’ve concluded that Caesar Cipher is a lying sack of shit, and the government (and/or the University of Puerto Rico) wants us to play a game, if we can figure out how to open the hatch. Somehow I work for MuchMusic (but they don’t pay me, and I live in Calgary) and you, Mark77, most likely are a robot.
Someone (XJ or FF4, I can’t remember) somehow extracted the source code from the site and found some scary (or fun, depending on how you look at it) leads/clues.
Other than that, there was a crazy lady shouting at XJ not to touch the 6152410 web site (AKA the Polybius site), and that the Phreak could also possibly be Jewish (or French, are jews allowed to fly transatlantic during passover?).
The Phreak is, or might, be Devon from MuchMusic, but he also might not be. Or he could be Devon’s brother, or some guy he went to school with in Montreal.
We have definitively concluded that this is most definitely a viral campaign, or an ARG (or it could be a real hacker). And the hacks have spread to other networks (but I haven’t seen them myself, so that’s probably not true).
Oh right, and just now there was a religious fanatic who, I believe, is trying to tell us that the Polybius site is a portal to the armageddon (come to think of it the crazy lady must have been the same person as the religious fanatic, I just put 2+2 together and came up with 666).
Every now and then someone pipes up with “this is boring” and/or “stupid”, and/or “I want to go home”, and yet I can’t take my eyes off this screen.

The tag line for the MMVA’s is “the fans take over”, that would be in the theme of this for sure.
I assume at this point it’s an arg to provote the MMVA’s, a new show, or both, perhaps a segment will be on the MMVA’s to premiere it.

Hello, SLS. No, I never went to go get the mask, and I don’t really intend to. If you read my latest blog post, you’ll see that I want to get away from this. I put one final theory forward, and that was it. It’s probably less farfetched than my other ones. You guys can keep going, and I will help you if you need it, but I have more important things to deal with. I realized that this thing is designed to suck people in so that they can try to figure out what’s happening. I was easily sucked in, and now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I’ve decided to move on. Now, this does not mean I’m giving up, but it does mean that it’s time to move on. I’ve changed my name and blog title as a result. But like I said, if you guys need help, by all means, ask me. Maybe you have some good ideas of your own. But I think my final blog post on the phreak615 saga will sum everything up for you.

I highly doubt the mask is even still there, it might not have even been there when Mark went by, unless it was a part of the store display (possible, but unlikely) I doubt a retail store would just agree to display a weird mask for some obscure reason, they might agree to display it for a photo op but probably not more then that. The Beast / Wow, it matters not how old you are, it just matters if you have something useful to add, which you did. And for the record, I’m a 21-year-old from Montreal.
I’m assuming that the “talking toys” that FTC is referring to are the people who have sent videos to the phreaky phraud. They are the “toys” that he is “playing” with, so to speak.
As for the blue mask at Influence U, I actually saw it today – yes, it’s still there – and I decided to ask a store employee about who may have placed it there. Unfortunately, they did not seem to know. However, Tongue Tied’s explanation of the placing of the mask pretty much hit the nail on the head.
If you look at my latest blog post, you’ll see that I’ve pretty much debunked the myth, and as a result, I am ready to move on. I’ll admit that I was intrigued by this at the beginning, as I found it to be a good chance to hone my investigative and conspiracy theory skills, but now that I’ve pretty much solved this thing, I find that there is no need to continue. I got into it, got involved, made some educated guesses, and now I’ve pretty much found the answer. And it’s all thanks to you people here. Without you and your support, I would have never managed to figure this whole mess out. phraud615 is supposedly in Paris now, thanks to the help of a green screen, and there’s a chance he may post some new snappy comment directed at me sometime soon, along wiht another sub-30 second long video clip. But I don’t care. In short, I came, I saw, I conquered, and now, I’m moving on. ‘Nuff said.

First time caller – “Okay wow. The school system is failing you. Learn some grammar.” He uses my old username, mentions the fact that the school system is failing me (I mentioned in a post I was 15) and he insulted my grammar, which is obviously good for my age.

Uh, Th3 b34zT, I’m concerned about you. I just read the post on Phreak615 and maybe, just maybe, you could think he directed it at you (although the word “wow” was actually a word in English before it was your former username) but there was definitely no threats made towards you that I can decipher. I think you’re either delusional or a shit disturber (or both) trying to create a fun internet stir tonight because you’re bored and at home alone. One thing I’m sure of is that there’s no way you’re a 15 year old, as no self respecting 15 year old would say “…and I’m only 15!!!” again and again and again. Just because you’re a virgin doesn’t mean you’re 15 (ok that was mean. I’m kidding about that part).
But seriously, I don’t see any validity to anything you’ve said here. I think you’re just lonely and looking for attention. But threats? I think you should present some more evidence of these threats before you call your “family friend.”

Keep in mind this is just a MARKETING scheme, a game to promote the MMVA’s. Look how the “phreak” provoked you even though you claimed to be finished with all of this. It does seem a bit lame right now, I’m thinking that the polybius site was uncovered too early and now they (the paid people behind the phreak) are stalling, it’s a long way off to June 15th. b34zt you are looking way too far into that post, they want to get you involved, not scare you, don’t worry. And if you contact the Star and an article is published the phreak has WON!

This is exactly why I’m calling it quits. I have more important things to do, such as study and write news copy (I work for a radio station). Mark, I didn’t say not to let this take over your mind/life (I don’t think you should, but it’s an interesting diversion). What I’m saying is look at it for what it is, not a hacker, not even a single person, an interesting marketing idea, a game to play, don’t take it personal. He issued you 1 “challenge”, probably only because you are in Montreal and Much Music obviously has connections in Montreal, it was an easy way to get everyones attention in a real world way, you were only a tool in the big plan. So just relax and either leave it alone or try and play the game.

You’re right, TT. It was an interesting diversion, and it was fun for a while. I said earlier that I like mysteries, and I often watch shows like CSI or Law and Order as a result. When I was a kid, I read some of the Sherlock Holmes stories, and I enjoyed them. What I really meant was that I’ve done and said what I had to, and now, I feel it’s time for someone else to be the conspiracy theorist. I had fun, but I don’t want to hog the spotlight or anything. I figured that it would only be right to let others do the guessing for a change. If anything, I always viewed this as a game, although I always knew what it really was. I’ve played the game, and I think I’ve found the answer. But the way this thing is designed, there will always be some other clues or information that will throw you off course a bit. That’s why this thing is fun to play along with. If anything, I guess should be thanking phreak615 for making a fun game of mysteries and educated guesses for us to play. In addition, I should also be thanking you guys for supporting me and helping me to figure out the answer. There’s always strength in numbers, and together, we all played this game and had fun, I suppose.

I’d say the challenge for me is completed. Here’s why. I saw the mask, and I got a good look at it. The packaging was still on it, which gave me the impression that it had been placed where it was quickly. It turns out that it’s blue, not green, and it’s some kind of adult mask from either a costume shop or the dollar store. Also, the mannequin was wearing a black t-shirt which had Tough on the front in big red letters. I forget the brand name, but it was some high-end company. Maybe the phreakster wants this to be tough for us? Does that sound logical? I don’t think I’ll be going back to the store because they already think I’m nuts. Does this help you in any way, FTC? And the fact the phreak appears to be everywhere also appears to be a good point. There must be some more clues. Maybe 24 and 10 could mean October 24th, but that’s just a guess.
Yeah, I guess I’m still playing along, although some of my other posts say otherwise. I can’t help it; I’m a mystery-lover, and this has become an enjoyable little diversion, to say the least. But I won’t have much time to reply over the next few days, ad my grandparents are coming in from Toronto, and I have other things to take care of. I will, however, pop in occasionally to see how things are coming along.

Ok, so I’ve been playing a lot of catch up lately.
I’ve been seeing this guy on MuchMusic for weeks and had no idea what was going on, but then I saw him in Paris so it’s sparked my imagination.
I’ve been floating from site to site and there’s a few things that I think should be brought up
Brains- I thought you were giving up? Clearly your words don’t speak your true feelings
Mad Mark – didn’t you post on another site you were giving up? Why didn’t you get the mask? You claim to have investigative spirit, but you’re afraid to ask a store clerk to see the mask and then you come on here and bash this whole thing? Did anyone think that Mad Mark’s lack of courage could be holding back a solid clue for us? Did anyone notice that after Mark failed to get the mask, this whole thing slowed down? Seems like sabotage to me Mr Mark. You’re all claiming to be bored and unafriad but when it comes to picking up a mask from a store front..you know and having to talk to someone…you run?
Also, it’s obv the MMVAs, no one is disputing that…at least not from what I have seen, but clearly there’s still a mystery. He’s not just posting senseless garble…he never has…there’s been a point to everything. So pat yourselves on the back for the MMVA guess…man…I wish he had made it easier….oh wait…IT’S IN HIS NAME! Clearly they wanted us to figure that out….but there’s clearly more to it.
For people who hate this so much, you’re spending a lot of time posting things. My advice is to just have fun with it. You’re all pretty smart from the thousands of posts I’ve seen, so why give up? If I go back to the store again and bother them, then they might call the police or something. I did get a good look at the mask, but I didn’t feel that I needed to get it. And as for the dleeted posts, maybe phreak deleted them because them because maybe they were a bit offensive, or had something in them that he didn’t agree with. Interesting.

The new video points to 6/15, so that basically confirms that whatever is happening will be revealed during the MMVAs. None of this is senseless; there’s a point to it all, and we’ve found out what it is. Here’s a quote from my latest blog entry:
“I think I have finally figured out what exactly Much is trying to promote here. As I noted earlier, the 615 in phreak615 seems to point to June 15th (6/15). I have learned that this is the date of the 2008 MuchMusic Video Awards (MMVAs). A user named tongue tied confirmed this on Mad Morten’s Dabbler.ca blog at http://www.dabbler.ca/news/phreak615-the-plot-thickens-20080418/. He (or she) said, and I quote:

The tagline of “the fans take over” seems to fit perfectly with this scheme, as this phreak615 person – rumoured to be Much VJ / news presenter Devon Soltendieck, a fellow Montreal native, or his brother – is trying to “take over” the station’s broadcasts so that he can promote some new aspect of the MMVAs, or the fact that the fans will be taking over in some way. Expect to see more fan voting and fan-favourite categories in the MMVAs as a result. Some of them may also allow fans to send in their own videos saying why they are voting for X, and why X deserves (insert name of fan award category here). phreak615 was testing this by telling fans to send him videos via YouTube, with the guarantee to put their videos on TV. That is what might happen at the MMVAs. Fans will be encouraged to send in their videos via YouTube or some other means, and their voting videos might be shown during the MMVAs.”

Somehow it’s seems funny that MTV Live Hacked..where users could chat during the show has been cancelled, yet now MUCH is being “hacked”.
As one who got his 15 minutes of being a famewhore thanks to Phreak, I appreciate it, but at the same time. This is a definite plug for the MMVA’s. I am now in full boycott of muchmusic and will no longer be supporting it.
FU Muchmusic… hm maybe I should start a website and people to send their anti-muchmusic sentiments via webcam and whatnot.. wouldn’t that be a marketing campaign backfire/PR nightmare.

Yeah, TT, that makes sense. I’d love to post a video. A friend offered to help me make it. I even have some crazy sunglasses that I could wear so that I could look like a phreak615 clone. If it’s a video “they” want, then it’s a video that they’ll get. I’ll get around to it eventually. Maybe we should all get blue masks and crazy sunglasses and make our own phreak videos. Sounds like a fun idea, I guess. We know they read our posts, and we know they’re either laughing or s**tting their pants becase they know we’re so smart. Expect a snappy comment from the phreak sometime soon about my acquisition of the blue mask. Well, I was a bit afraid, but when I saw a UPS guy entering the store, I saw him talking to the manager. I then showed the manager my computer and the pics from the phreak’s blog, and told him it was for an online scavenger hunt. He then got the mask for me, I showed him some ID, and that was it. I then discovered the note, and I read it. I also asked a store employee who delivered the mask, and he said it was “some guy in a suit.” I got nothing extra form being first. And no, I did not screw you all over. Will you get off my back about that already? Sheesh.

If this is true, it basically puts an end to all the speculation.

I don’t think there was much speculation, I’m pretty sure most people realized right away (or almost right away) that it was a Much Music ad (viral marketing it seems) for a new show/the MMVA’s. Some of us have been hoping that an ARG would develop from it, but who knows…….

I remember the VJ’s saying something about A show called “Much Phreakout” premeiring on May 16 which is 5/16 or 615 backwards. THe latest post on the blog may or may not be to lead you off his trail I don’t know what he is thinking all i did was remember and ad for a TV show on May 16 maybe you people can check it out. I noticed that Phreak165 is in the commerical for the MMVA’S. It’s just a hunch, But i’m thinking he might appear at the MMVA’S or unmask himself there.
I’m also 99% sure this is a scam from Much Music. I’m pretty pissed about that. They’re taking us all for idiots.

You’re exactly right, Axel-Chan. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Here’s what I believe that the following will happen during the MMVAs:
phreak615 will try to hack / sabotage the MMVAs for whatever reason. Things will keep happening which will cause things to go awry. The police will be called, and they will try to track him down. Eventually, it will all culminate in a big chase scene, where the police will catch phreak615 and unmask him. Something similar happened on New Year’s Day 1994 on YTV. If any of you were born in 1986 like me, or earlier, you might remember it. Anyway, that’s probably what’s going to happen during the MMVAs. Believe me, it’ll be more staged than something in the WWE. Thoughts?

Folks, the game is up. The whole Phreak615 saga is a big sham. Turns out it’s a contest. And now, allow me to blow the whole contest for you, being the spoiler that I am. My brother says it’s a scam, and he’s absolutely right.
Let’s break it down, using the “lineup” at http://www.muchmusic.com/phreak.
Phreak615 is not black (obviously).
Phreak615 does not have facial hair (at least as far as we know).
Phreak615 is most definitely not a woman (see above).
Phreak615 is not fat-looking. If his most recent picture is anything is anything to go by, then he’s relatively thin and trim.
Thus, the answer is none of the 6 people pictured on that website are Phreak615. I believe that there is an 80% chance that he is, in fact, Devon Soltendieck, as we had mentioned a while back. So Devon, now that the jig is basically up, just pack up and go home. It’s enough already. You’ve toyed with us long enough, and this whole thing turned out to be a stupid contest. I bet this whole thing must mean that Devon is leaving Much to pursue other projects, and wants to go out in “style”. Either that or he wants to get his own show where people will be encouraged to send in videos agreeing or disagreeing with different topics. However, judging by the above photo, there is a possibility that Phreak615 might be Tim Deegan, or maybe even someone else who presently works for Much. You can see some brown hair showing at the bottom on the blue mask in Phreak’s most recent photo. Well, now that we know what this whole thing is all about, I can honestly say that it totally lacks style. Wow, how the mighty have fallen. Weak idea, Much. Very weak. What was once a fascinating ARG has now become a worthless waste of time.

Did you ever just think it was a scheme by Much Music to provoke their viewers to input their videos of them for the MMVAs. They probably wanted to make this MMVA enter differently. o_o Even though it’s been like a year since the occurrences, what ever. I just think it was a way to let Much Music viewers who weren’t there, be there in a theoretical way. =]
