perfect-101.jpgHad I lived in the 50’s, I woulda had to spend hours at the salon, exposed myself to toxic fumes, and given up my first born all in the name of gorgeous, completely unnatural looking hair. Flash me back to the present however and you’ve got Clairol’s Perfect 10 by Nice ‘n Easy claiming to give the natural colour I crave for $15.99 Cdn and a mere ten minutes of my time. Toss in the assurance that I won’t be falling into a chemically induced coma and I’m sold! But this one I had to see to believe. What have the scientists at Clairol come up with now? To find out, I put Perfect 10 to the test.

Read on to get The Goods on Perfect 10!

The latest hair dye on the market.
The latest assignment from the big boss.
The latest favour I had to ask of my beautiful, wonderful, loving aunt.

Calling someone up and asking them if you can use them as a guinea pig is a daunting task, especially when the colour that you’re working with is this luscious blonde. I can only hope for it to be in an appropriate shade for my hair next time…but until then, let’s take a look at what we got.

With the technology available back in 1956 when Clairol introduced the first at-home hair dye kit, you can bet that it required a significant investment of your time, not to mention damage to your locks. More than 50 years later, Perfect 10’s promise is shiny, natural hair colour in just ten minutes using the new ‘AminoGlycine technology’ by Proctor & Gamble – The idea being that you get easy, permanent hair colour with less damage than other dyes out there.

With my hairdresser’s number on speed dial and a signed contract holding myself financially liable for any blunders, I somehow managed to pry the box of dye out of my aunt’s hands and was allowed to begin.

First on the tackle list: The claim that this dye isn’t going to sear the hairs out of my nose with each breath.

Upon first smell, I was really impressed. It smelled fruity and light…with a hint of chemical undertones maybe, but still, a vast improvement over the competition.

Moving on: Actually dye the hair.

Ah yes. One of my favourite pastimes. Hair dying for me has always been a challenge. The process is full of questions like “Did I get everything?” “Is my scalp supposed to have that slight burning feeling?” “When do I take it off?” “Did I really need to do that spot allergy test thing I read about?” “Hmmm…my head feels funny.”

perfect-10-application3.jpgThe pack comes with an easy applicator comb to help the process along. As usual, I feel Clairol may have over-exaggerated how easy it is to use the comb – and in the process made me feel like a fool because I did have a little trouble – but on the whole, it was easier than the more traditional dye bottles. The nice thing is that if you prefer the old bottles, they give you that option as well, providing you with both the comb and the tip for the applicator bottle.

After 10 minutes – no more and no less – my aunt was left with a beautiful hair colour that was shiny, soft, and evenly coloured. What started as dark roots and almost blonde ends, became a beautiful strawberry blonde. The downside: it had little to no resemblance to the advertised colour. Obviously the starting hair colour dictates the resulting shade but based on the legend at the back of the box, we were expecting a nice dark golden blonde. Quite the difference. While this was a concern, that’s the risk you take when you spend $15.99 versus $100 (plus tip!), and ten minutes as opposed to two hours on this kind of thing.

So, the verdict is in. Perfect 10 scores a slightly less than perfect 9 (yes, that looks as lame on virtual paper as it sounds in my head). The colour was even and left the hair looking shiny and feeling soft. I didn’t experience hallucinations from the fumes and it was easy to use. The difference between the box colour and the colour we ended up with turned out to be fine, but still registered as a point against.

All in all, I would recommend this dye to anyone considering an at-home dye job. For this hair diva who’s sprouting greys left, right, and centre, you might just have to fight me for that last box of Perfect 10 at the drugstore.

[...] My Weblog wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerpt Had I lived in the 50’s, I woulda had to spend hours at the salon, exposed myself to toxic fumes, and given up my first born all in the name of gorgeous, completely unnatural looking hair. • Good to know. Too bad they didn’t send a dark brown or black one. Might have to pick one up the next time I’m at London Drugs. Thanks!

  • Stasia, The reason your Aunts hair came out strawberry blonde has nothing to do with the product and everything to do with the natural red undertones in her hair. I know, I am a redhead with two redheaded kids and a background full of redheads!

  • I used the light auburn best hair dye i’ve ever usedddd

  • Saw the hair two nights ago. A week later, the colour still looks great and there were no complaints of dryness or brittle hair! Clairol’s score remains!

  • Wow, I am shocked at the positive remarks made about this product ! I normally used the Clairol product Hydrience but it seems to be MIA since Perfect 10 came out, so I thought what the heck, give it a try.. less time right? Well, I was left with a head of straw! So drying and the grey coverage? Not in my lifetime. If I had to rate this product, I would give it a 0… yes a zero…I am not a newbie to hair colouring. I have professional experience. I am now calling Clairol for a second time and find out another possible substitute. Best of luck to all with their colouring.

  • Just used the Perfect 10 in light auburn. Love the overall coverage and the shine left behind. One of the best colours I have ended up with. the only negative is the “comb” cap. It is really really too messy. Next time I will use the regular tip that comes with the product.

  • It made my hair orange when i wanted it blonde it looks like crap and i hate it and now i need to know if i dy over it or Go dark brown ???

  • Im not that sure wut to do now ??

  • A HUGE thumbs down on this product. 1. Overpowering ammonia, eyes watered and coughing from the fumes when rinsing. 2. Gray coverage, hahaha. NOT! 3. Used whole tube of conditioner after rinsing just to get it managable again, it felt like STRAW!! 4. MESSY, MESSY, MESSY!! I will stick to Loreal Excellence, my never fail hair colour for gray coverage and soft managable hair after using. Pure garbage, I want my money back!!

  • I’m really shocked at the negative comments coming out for this one. My mom even used the product based on my review and loved it. She said the grey coverage was excellent, it didn’t smell bad and it was quick and easy.

I think that as a rule, at home dye kits just aren’t perfect. You’re never going to get salon quality and it’s always a bit of a gamble. Then again, I know more than a few people who have had to get salon jobs fixed too. I would just be thankful that this cost you $15 and 10 minutes of your time instead of $200 and many many hours…

    Melissa Says:

Have been dyeing my own hair for over twelve years and know what I’m doing. Just tried the Perfect 10 light auburn and am absolutely horrified. My hair felt like dry, brittle straw AS I was rinsing it out. I’ve never experienced that before and was actually afraid. My hair is now damaged, my roots are dark, and the rest of my hair is a horror of uneven, varying shades of auburn. I am EXTREMELY disappointed and have emailed and complained to a company for the first time in my life. And, yes, the product DID smell bad. Certainly not “fruity” as others have reported. There is nothing I can do except to remember that a “perfect” and “ten-minute” hair dye WAS too good to be true. :-(

  • I just bought the light auburn. I found the smell very strong and chemical based. My poor daughter had to leave the bathroom while I was dying my hair because it smelled so bad. I have grey roots and I left the product on for 15 mins (for those stubburn grey hairs). I am sad to say that it did a very poor job covering the greys, you can still see them. The colour itself is nice but I’m disappointed that it didn’t proivde 100% coverage. I also found that my hair felt strange when rinsing out product. I’d give the smell a 1 out of 10, the colour itself a 7 out of 10 and the 100% grey coverage a 1 out of 10.

I was quit excited to buy a hair colouring that woould take only 10 – 15 minutes. My comment is: it was nice to have it all done in such a short time but after two week only I have to dye my hair again because it didn’t last. Sorry, I want purchase this again. I’m 60 years of age and I need something that will last.

I am VERY disappointed with Clairol Perfect 10 hair color. It changed the texture of my hair and it now gets very tangled when wet. When it came time to rinse the coloring out of my hair, my hair was very tangled and a lot broke off. I had to use the conditioner to untangle my hair and rinse out the coloring. Each time I wash my hair now, because of the texture, it gets tangled and a lot of hair breaks off. The comb applicator is a gimmick and not relevant. I had been using Clairol Hydrience hair coloring for over a decade and loved the results; unfortunately, it is no longer available. Perfect 10 is not a good product. Clairol lost a long standing customer.

  • I purchased Clairol Perfect Ten for the second time. I have always liked Clairol Products but can I say that I developed a very bad rash on my hands and the begining of my arms and then 2 weeks later after using Perfect Ten a developted a very serious it appeared like the upper eye lid was burned as well as my neck developed severe itching so bad that I had to see my doctor as it was getting worse as days passed by. I am on two medication for a scalding appearance on the eye lid and for my hands and arms another treatment. I wore the gloves and none of the hair colour touched my eye lids and my eyebrows are also affected. After days of thinking back of what I had used that would have had this type of reaction to my skin and after seeing my doctor which she is fairly certain it was the hair colour. Like I said I have used Clairol Products before with no side effects. I followed the instructions on the inside sheet inserted inside the box of colour. As well my hair did feel as well course and straw like texture and got worst as time passed.
So needless to say I am contacting Clairol and reporting the side effect of the Clairol Perfect Ten. I would advise they take it off the shelf in stores and for no one to purchase this product. I am a mess my eye lids have lost the elasticity in them and my hands, neck are constantly itchy and has a burning feeling to them and this has been almost a month since I used the second box of the Clairol Perfect Ten. I sure hope my eyes and other parts of me will return to the healthy skin I had.
As well it coloured in two tones one darker than the other the same happened to my daughter the top portion of the hair was an auburn and the top back hair was almost black very uneven coverage after following the colouring instructions. We will never purchase this product again. There is a very serious problem with this product….get it off the shelves…..IMMEDIATELY…

  • I hated this product. The color was great, however, I have always had normal–not dry–hair and now the texture of my hair is horrible. I have always had thick, curly hair and now it is extremely dry and fine. I absolutely hate what it has done to my hair.

    Now Brittle Auburn Says:

I used this product 1 month ago. My fine, curly, formerly healthy hair is now straw dry, brittle and breaking off. Sitting with conditioner on as I write this. HUGE mistake to try this product, I am so mad at myself! Have been using Wella Color Charm for years with great results, read about Perfect 10 in O magazine and decided to give it a shot. Very strong smell, slightly burned and I only left it on for 8 minutes. Again, HUGE mistake! Will take months to restore the condition of my hair. NEVER WILL USE A PRODUCT LIKE THIS AGAIN! Lesson learned! Should have read these 1st hand accounts BEFORE ruining my hair! Extremely dissapointed!

  • I have very minimal gray along my temples and this product did absolutely nothing for coverage. I tried it a second time because I really liked the concept of a 10 minute product which touted results of beautiful, shiney, gray-free tresses…..but no luck. I thought that maybe it just did not “take” to my hair structure but it seems that there are many who have experienced the same dissatisfaction with the product. I won’t be using it again.

  • I had light blonde hair and wanted warmer tones for the winter…purchased dark blonde…my hair literally went gray!!!! I am 28!!!! After a huge ordeal of 2 other shades to add color back into my hair, customer service assured me I could now use Perfect 10 and get the desired result…once again my hair went gray…I will NEVER purchase another product of clairols again…(they were my favorite).

  • can I mix nice&easy color blend 120 with 121A to receve the color I desire?

    Katy Reid Says:

Wow,I thought maybe I was the only one dissatisfied with this product as Clairol has always been a name(so I thought)women, and men, could trust.I guess I was wrong. I purchased your “PERFECT10″(nice marketing gimmick)on Nov.27th/08,from a drugstore here in Victoria BC.As a Nurse I work odd hours so I tried it this evening. Two minutes into the application,my hair was comming out in chunks on the applicator comb.I have actually saved the amount of hair that I have lost(as well as the packaging etc)as I may seek legal action.I will definately make this public,so that this product, and it’s damages, will never be experienced by another consumer again.I welcome your call.My phone number is (250)370-0966.
    Thank you
    Katy Reid

  • Hi Katy, we’re in no way affiliated with the company that produces this product. This is merely an opinion/product testing piece and reflects the results of only one person’s use. Please contact Clairol directly with any concerns, and thank you for posting your comments!

  • I’ve never used a home colour product, but I know the first rule is ALWAYS do a strand test AND a patch test. Did anyone — DIY colour veterans or not — in this thread of comments actually do the pre-process tests?

Environmental factors, diet, product residue — all of those things can affect how hair reacts to colour, even if you always use the same brand and sku. As well, it’s a CHEMICAL reaction. While cosmetics companies generally do their best to make sure their products are safe, they’ll only be safe for a general group. Folks with extreme sensitivities or who develop extreme sensitivities will always exist (it’s the curse of being unique individuals). Hence the strand test and the patch test, so consumers can actively participate in their own cosmetic safety.

Not blaming anyone here — just curious. Out of all these people, who actually a) read the instructions and b) followed them to the letter?

  • bonjour ,

  • What an awful product! I would rename this product as PERFECT MESS! The colour looked nothing like the box. Not only that, I had one colour (a dirty brown/red at the roots and a few inches into the hair) and some odd dark plum almost black colour on the rest of my hair. I look absolutely ridiculous!

To add to that, after 6 washes, this rubbish product leaked onto my favourite white swimming costume and has died that with dark purple/red streaks. I have never had these problems with any other product. I’ve been dying my hair for almost 30 years so I know what I’m doing.

And has anyone tried to complain to them? Their website is a complete minefield, you can’t get to an area where you can actually email them and tell them what you think or try and get your money back and compensation!

I will agree to all the negative comments here and add mine below:

    There is NO shine
    My hair is like straw
I wish I had never tried this product
I will never use Clairol again

And I advise anyone reading this, never buy Perfect -10, not ever, it’s perfectly horrendous!

    Jillian Says:

I used Perfect 10 in medium auburn flash a week ago and loved the results. I got a lot of compliments. It left my hair very soft and shiny and I didnt get any uneven results. For the ladies who complain about streaks in their hair color, I would suggest maybe using 2 boxes of haircolor. Never try to go lighter with an at home hair color kit unless it specifies that is a color-lifting or highlighting kit.For example, if you have dark brown hair and you want a hint of red, get the dark auburn, not the mediumor light. This will prevent the orange appearance or any “hot roots”. Unfortunately, the only way to fix an orangey mess is to cover it up with a darker neutral color. I hope this helps everyone. There are always rules to follow when dying your hair and if you are unsure about them, then by all means, seek professional help!!!! GOOD LUCK

I am extremely disappointed in this product. After my first wash, I, like a few others here, had hair like straw and it tangled easily. THEN, when I went to straighten my hair with my flat iron, I am now left with greasy, sticky hair, and the stuff – whatever it is in the hair color that is making my hair greasy and sticky, won’t come out!!! I’m livid and I’m contacting Clairol for sure. This stuff is terrible.

    Glitch Says:

Re: hair turning gray, adding color to already bleached hair isn’t easy and is best done professionally – simply using a darker shade will often result in a mess because there is a very specific manner in which the pigment in the hair can be built up again. (I learned this the hard way just as many of you of course). In a salon they often use two different dyes, first to add some warm tones into the hair and then the darkener to feed off the established tone – you definitely can’t just use a dark blonde dye on light blonde hair and expect it to look like it does on the package.

Same rules apply when you are trying to switch from very dark to very light – it simply doesn’t work with an over-the-counter coloring kit.

I used Perfect 10 as an alternative to my usual L’Oreal preference, to touch up my roots and to freshen up my lightest blonde hair tone. I found that despite the nice smell it by no means surpassed L’Oreal products, but I didn’t have any horrible experiences with it either. The hair looks quite shiny and the tone is very even. I did feel the tangled mess a bit, but that was easily resolved with a couple of rounds of conditioning washes – nothing unlike any other drugstore brand other than L’Oreal. All in all, I will probably not be using this product again as a first choice, but it’s not a bad alternative if it happens to be on sale.

I AM EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY, NOT HAPPY WITH THIS PRODUCT AT ALL, I HAVE BEEN USING CLAIROL PRODUCTS FOR YEARS AND FOUND THEM OK FOR A QUICK FIX INBETWEEN SALON VISITS, I PURCHASED PERFACT 10 THE OTHER DAY, YES I DID THE SKIN TEST, YES I DID THE PATCH TEST, ALL OK, WENT ON TO COLOUR MY HAIR, AS I ONLY NEEDED A QUICK TOUCH UP I ONLY USED A QUARTER OF THE PRODUCT AND ONLY LEFT IT ON FOR 5 TO 6 MINUTES, DIDNT HAVE MUCH OF A PROBLEM WITH IT AS I WAS RINSING IT OUT, IT DID LEAVE MY HAIR DRY AND DULL, THOUGHT OK I WONT USE THAT ONE AGAIN, HOWEVER A FEW HOURS LATER WHEN I WAS AT A WEDDING IT STARTED TO ITCH, IT WAS ITCHING TO THE POINT I WANTED TO PUT MY HEAD IN THE ICE BUCKET TO COOL IT DOWN, I WENT HOME AND HAD A LOOK AT MY NECK, TO MY HORROR I NOTICED MY EARS AND NECK WERE FULL OF BLISTERS AND MY EARS WERE TWICE THE SIZE THEY SHOULD BE, I PUT SOME COOL WATER ON MY NECK TO COOL IT DOWN AND WENT TO BED, THE NEXT MORNING I WOKE UP AND MY HAIR WAS STUCK TO THE SIDES OF MY FACE WHERE ALL THE BLISTERS WERE WEEPING, AS IT WAS THE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND I COULDNT GET TO SEE A CHEMIST, IT WAS GETTING REALLY BAD, I STAYED HOME ALL DAY WANTING TO PUT MY HEAD IN THE FREEZER, THE NEXT MORNING I WOKE UP AND MY HAIR WAS STUCK TO THE SIDES OF MY FACE AGAIN, WORSE, I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TRY TO PUT MY HAIR IN A LOOSE BAND AND GO TO WORK, I WAS FEELING A BIT SICK AND SHAKEY TO, MY WORK COLLEGUE WAS HORRIFIED WHEN I SHOWED HER THE DAMAGE IT HAS DONE, BY THEN I WAS FEELING REALLY SHAKEY, AFTER DINNER BREAK I WENT TO THE LOO AND AS I WAS WASHING MY HANDS I THOUGHT ID BETTER HAVE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR SEE HOW BAD IT WAS, I WAS NOT LOOKING IN THE RIGHT MORROR I THOUGHT, I WAS IN SHOCK AT THE SIGHT OF IT, MY FACE HAD DOUBLED TO THE SIZE IT NORMALLY WAS AND MY EARS WERE EVEN BIGGER, I LOOKED LIKE A MONSTER, AND THE PAIN WAS UNBELIEVABLE, I RACED OVER TO MY COLLEGUE AND SHE CALLED THE DOCTOR WHO SAW ME WITHIN THE HOUR, I WAS ITCHING ALL OVER TO, HE TOOK ONE LOOK AT ME AND SAID WOT SALON DID THIS TO YOU ITS HORRENDOUS, AFTER A WHILE WITH THE DOCTOR TRYING TO CALM ME DOWN I WENT HOME WITH STEROID CREAM FOR MY EARS ANTIHISTOMINES FOR THE SWELLING AND ANTIBIOTICS, AND A WEEK OFF WORK AS IT IS THAT BAD, THAT WAS YESTERDAY, I AM IN A LOT OF PAIN AND LOOK HORRIBLE, I CANT EVEN WASH MY HAIR AS IT IS THAT PAINFULL, AND WEEPING, I CANT SAY HOW UPSET I AM ABOUT THIS, I AM NEVER GOING TO USE THESE PRODUCTS AGAIN, AND FOUND THAT THE COMPANY WERE USLESS AND DIDNT REALLY CARE, DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT THIS.

  • i just bought this a few days ago. sounded like a great hair dye to try after i had my hair color glossed at the salon for 65.00 and LOVED IT!!! my hair was a darkkk brown with alot of shine..but only looked so nice for about the 1st 3-4 days then it got alot lighter and started to show my golden brown to fast so i went and grabbed me this box & one other. Now since i read the horrrrrible reviews it is def goin back! i only got it cause it sais glossy and i was hoping it would last longer for a cheaper price. if it’s that bad..hopefully others will look elsewhere to keep your beautiful hair in it’s best possible shape & leave this product on the shelves, glad i can get my money back..cause it was pricey!

  • I bought this product and after reading the reviews I am afraid to use it. It is really that bad.

  • I used this product 5 weeks ago. I have fine, THIN hair and this dye made my hair thicker, fuller, healthy. I am naturally blonde and used the lightest blonde. Color wasn’t exactly as box, but not too bad. Only downfall? It lasted only a week and a half. Color came out waaaaay too quick. If not for that, I’d be a regular customer of this product.

  • i was in the hospital twice for the hives this product caused i had welts and hives and rashes from head to toe on my body was give oral prednisone and benadryl and when that didnt work it was given introveneously, i went home yet to return the next day as the hives for progressively worse, i was on steroids for 6 days, my throat started to close and was given an epipen and rx anthihistamines. NEVER USE THIS PRODUCT!!!!! i also had a welt on the botton of my scalp that became the size of a small baseball, i guess i will be grey…..
